| Abstract |
Shaffer (b. 1917) recalls growing up in Vandalia, Illinois, and discusses the Depression. He participated in ROTC at the University of Illinois and was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1940. He served aboard the USS Hornet at the time of Pearl Harbor, recalls Doolittle's raid over Tokyo, and the battle of Midway. He also served aboard the Montpelier and saw action in the Solomon Islands. After a period on Guam, he was assigned to occupation duty on Chichi Jima in the Bonin Islands, where he served as the senior member of the board of investigation for war crimes. He also served in Korea as naval gunfire officer for the 1st Marine Division. He retired in 1961 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Interviewed by Becky Lloyd. 72 pages. |

Show ROB RT D. HAFFER PRIL 29, 2002 BEC: Now that must have been a different per p ctiv b cau e you d b n killing Japanese and fighting them for all these years. ROB: Absolutely, absolutely. BEC: And then to have- ROB: Well, when I left Guam, I went to Tokyo, and I was out to Major Horie' s house for dinner. Then when I went to Korea I stopped by to see him, and when I left Korea I stopped by to see him. And we exchanged Christmas cards for a number of years till he died. BEC: Really? ROB: Yes. But it was interesting, too, Becky. He went to the Japanese Imperial War College, but he was basically a peasant, of peasant extraction. He wasn't among the elite, and the Japanese War College just usually accepted elite people. But he was smart enough, he passed the exam, and he went to the Imperial War College. I wanted to show you, though, a picture of John Kusiak. It's kind of a story here, but might be interesting. When I was back at the Command and Staff School, John and I shared a room in Quantico. Here it is right here. He entered the Marine Corps as a private and fought on Guadalcanal, the battles of the Tenaru and the Metanikau Rivers. But then, after I was on Guam, he had gone ahead of me; he had gone up to the Bonin Islands. I saw him up there. We were good friends there. Then, he decided he wanted to go to college after the war, so I was ordered back. After I got back, I went to the Second Battalion, Tenth Marines at Camp Lejeune. You know who showed up there? BEC: No! ROB: (laughs) Yes, John. 50 |
