| Abstract |
Shaffer (b. 1917) recalls growing up in Vandalia, Illinois, and discusses the Depression. He participated in ROTC at the University of Illinois and was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1940. He served aboard the USS Hornet at the time of Pearl Harbor, recalls Doolittle's raid over Tokyo, and the battle of Midway. He also served aboard the Montpelier and saw action in the Solomon Islands. After a period on Guam, he was assigned to occupation duty on Chichi Jima in the Bonin Islands, where he served as the senior member of the board of investigation for war crimes. He also served in Korea as naval gunfire officer for the 1st Marine Division. He retired in 1961 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Interviewed by Becky Lloyd. 72 pages. |

BEC: We're continuing on here with a follow-up interview. We re going to be mainly talking about what, in the Bonin Islands, you said, or have you got other things? ROB: The Bonin Islands. Have you ever seen a map as to where they are? BEC: No. [turns tape off] ROB: The Bonin Islands are about 450 miles south east of Tokyo. There are three major islands: Chichi Jima, Haha Jima, and Ani Jima. I guess we're about ready to start then. Okay. On the thirteenth of December 1945, the surrender ceremony was held, at which time the Japanese flag was pulled down and the American flag was raised. Then soon thereafter, Colonel Rixey appointed a Board of Investigation for war crimes. The Board of Investigation consisted of Wilburn N. Caskey, First Lieutenant U.S. Marine Corps Reserve; Eugene F. Poutasse, MD, Lieutenant, U.S. Navy Reserve, Robert Parcells, Lieutenant U.S. Navy Reserve; and Major Robert D. Shaffer, U.S. Marine Corps, senior member; DanielL. Williams, Lieutenant Gg), U.S. Navy Reserve, as interpreter; and Donald K. Buth, private first class, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve as reporter. When the Savory family arrived on Chichi Jima, coming back from Japan unexpectedly, they brought with them a Chinese fisherman by the name ofKanemura. The Board of Investigation first met at 09:00, 26 December 1945. If you will remember that the Japanese told us that the American prisoners of war had been killed in a U.S. bombing raid. So we first met and started questioning members of the Savory family, of which Fred Savory was very fluent in English as well as Japanese, and we had him sit in |
