| Abstract |
Shaffer (b. 1917) recalls growing up in Vandalia, Illinois, and discusses the Depression. He participated in ROTC at the University of Illinois and was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1940. He served aboard the USS Hornet at the time of Pearl Harbor, recalls Doolittle's raid over Tokyo, and the battle of Midway. He also served aboard the Montpelier and saw action in the Solomon Islands. After a period on Guam, he was assigned to occupation duty on Chichi Jima in the Bonin Islands, where he served as the senior member of the board of investigation for war crimes. He also served in Korea as naval gunfire officer for the 1st Marine Division. He retired in 1961 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Interviewed by Becky Lloyd. 72 pages. |

Show ROBERT D. HAFFER PRJL 29 2002 ROB: It was the first capital of the state. And the story goes-are you interested? BEC: Yes. Keep going. ROB: Abraham Lincoln was a member of the legislature and the old courthouse is a two-story building right in the center of Vandalia. And the story goes that one day they were about to vote about moving the capital to Springfield. And Lincoln arrived and found out that he didn't have enough votes; he wanted to move the capital to Springfield. So the story goes, he hung by his hands and dropped out of the second story window so there would not be a quorum in the legislature. The next day he rounded up enough of his fellow people who wanted to move and they voted to move the capital to Springfield. Now whether that story is true or not, this is a local legend. And I'll show you a picture of that capital in a few minutes, if you'd like to see it, because it's historic. But I was born there, went to school there, graduated from high school, and went to the University of Illinois. Graduated from there in 1940 and entered the Marine Corps as a second lieutenant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where the basic school was. BEC: Let me ask you a little about your family. Tell me who your parents were. ROB: All right. My father was Robert Byton Shaffer. I don't know whether you want to record this or not, but he was orphaned when he was about eight-no I guess he was about twelve. His father died. He grew up in the middle part of Ohio and in those days orphans-because women didn't work in those days or his mother had no way of making a living-he was farmed out to a family by the name of Johnson, as a farmer.
