| Abstract |
Shaffer (b. 1917) recalls growing up in Vandalia, Illinois, and discusses the Depression. He participated in ROTC at the University of Illinois and was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1940. He served aboard the USS Hornet at the time of Pearl Harbor, recalls Doolittle's raid over Tokyo, and the battle of Midway. He also served aboard the Montpelier and saw action in the Solomon Islands. After a period on Guam, he was assigned to occupation duty on Chichi Jima in the Bonin Islands, where he served as the senior member of the board of investigation for war crimes. He also served in Korea as naval gunfire officer for the 1st Marine Division. He retired in 1961 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Interviewed by Becky Lloyd. 72 pages. |

Show ROBERT D. HAFFER PRIL 29 2002 mate that controlled the firing key would say Reveille, you ba tards! th n h d pull the firing key. BEC: ROB: BEC: Oh! The guns would go off. (laughs) ROB: So there, we're bombarding heavily there like mad, and then we'd go south and we passed a group of islands called the Shortlands- they're at the southern end of Bougainville- and this is about dawn, and we fire a bombardment there. They had some coastal defense guns and some seaplanes so we fired like mad and hoped we would do some damage. The other thing, too, I forgot to tell you, though, for these night bombardments, our senior aviator would fly in a PBY and observe as to what we were hitting, or what we were doing. BEC: Right. ROB: But, anyhow, one of my Marines got hit by splinters in that bombardment, whatever the Japanese fired at us. So, anyhow, we're shooting at the Shortland Islands, then we came back down, and at that time we got intelligence that the Japanese were sending a task force of cruisers and destroyers down from Rabaul. You know, Rabaul's up in the New Britain Islands. So we fuel the destroyers and tum about and go back up. Also, at this time the Third Marine Division was landed on Bougainville in a place called Empress Augusta Bay. The Third Marine Division is ashore there. END OF SIDE B, TAPE 1 37 |
