Show ROBERT D. HAFFER PRIL 29 2002 job to try to get quarters fixed up for some of the wives to come out. And on of th fir t home-cooked meals I had was after John's wife Pennie got there. They had me up to their quarters for a roast beef dinner. BEC: Oh, I bet that was great. ROB: After I finished two years out at Little Creek, then I ended up at FMF Atlantic, which was in the Naval Base in Norfolk: Fleet Marine Force Atlantic Headquarters. Then from there, I went to Korea. I became the Naval gunfire officer of the First Marine Division when I first got there. I relieved a fellow by the name of Bill Pal a. Then after about three months, I was given command of the Fourth Battalion, Eleventh Marines, which is a 155-howitzer battalion. Then after serving there, I came back to the states. I'm trying to think now, for sure, where we went next. BEC: How long were you in Korea? ROB: I was there for ten months, Becky. The armistice had not been signed, although there was the line there at Panmunjom, they had started some meetings, but during the time I was there the fighting on the outposts was just as vicious as any other. At that time, do you know what a VT fuse is? BEC: No. ROB: Okay. It's called a variable time fuse or a proximity fuse and it's supposed to go off when it gets in proximity to the ground. And some of the night fights in the outpost would be where our men would be realizing they were going to be overrun and they would get into a dugout and call in VT fire on the position, such that the artillery would be firing on our own position, hopefully killing the North Koreans or the Chinese, 57 |
