| Abstract |
Shaffer (b. 1917) recalls growing up in Vandalia, Illinois, and discusses the Depression. He participated in ROTC at the University of Illinois and was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1940. He served aboard the USS Hornet at the time of Pearl Harbor, recalls Doolittle's raid over Tokyo, and the battle of Midway. He also served aboard the Montpelier and saw action in the Solomon Islands. After a period on Guam, he was assigned to occupation duty on Chichi Jima in the Bonin Islands, where he served as the senior member of the board of investigation for war crimes. He also served in Korea as naval gunfire officer for the 1st Marine Division. He retired in 1961 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Interviewed by Becky Lloyd. 72 pages. |

Show ROBERT D. HAFFER PRIL 29, 2002 ships named Ca ter and Pollux. George Bradley was on the a ter. On the trip to Argentia, Newfoundland, the ship ran aground because the seaman watching the fathometer had not bothered to tell the captain when they passed the fifty fathom line. George Bradley was a member of the crew at that time, he helped them get a line ashore and some of the officers and men were saved by riding in a breeches buoy. BEC: Oh, yeah. Right. ROB: Some of the others perished. There's another book you might want to read. It's called, Standing Into Danger. BEC: Standing Into? ROB: Standing Into Danger. I'll get it out for you so you can write it down. Anyhow, like I say, George was the calmest man I'd ever know. He used to smoke a cigarette and he'd keep turning it over. BEC: Really? ROB: Yeah, I don't know whether it was a nervous habit or just reflection, but, oh, I started to say, though, George had gotten covered with oil getting ashore so he got back aboard the ship and calmly went and took a shower, while the ship's on the rocks breaking up. Now that's what they'd say is-oh, here he is. BEC: ROB: BEC: ROB: Oh, I'll come on this side. This is George here. Doesn't that say Bradley here? Yeah, it does. That's George Bradley. He's back there, the ship's breaking up on the rocks, and George is taking a shower (laughs). BEC: (laughs). 34 |
