Show ROBERT D. HAFFER PRIL 29 2002 we got through all right except the port life raft was torn off. We d slipped again t th side. So then we went around and went into San Diego for a couple of day . an Diego at that time was a typical Navy town there. Have you ever been to San Diego? BEC: ROB: BEC: ROB: I've been to San Diego, yeah. Recently? Well, about four years ago. Oh, well, I mean, it's a city now but then it was a little Navy town, full of bars and prostitute hangouts, that type of thing. It was sort of a military air show. The only thing I remember about it was Jimmy Doolittle was a stunt pilot and he was flying a bi-plane that he'd come down and bounce off the ground and so forth. But that was the first time I'd heard of him. The second time was, once we were out to sea leaving San Francisco, then we were told over the loudspeaker what we were going to do. But we went, I guess you'd say, in a northwest course. There were a couple of cruisers (Nashville and Vincennes) and destroyers with us. And then somewhere way north of the Hawaiian 19 |
