| Abstract |
Shaffer (b. 1917) recalls growing up in Vandalia, Illinois, and discusses the Depression. He participated in ROTC at the University of Illinois and was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1940. He served aboard the USS Hornet at the time of Pearl Harbor, recalls Doolittle's raid over Tokyo, and the battle of Midway. He also served aboard the Montpelier and saw action in the Solomon Islands. After a period on Guam, he was assigned to occupation duty on Chichi Jima in the Bonin Islands, where he served as the senior member of the board of investigation for war crimes. He also served in Korea as naval gunfire officer for the 1st Marine Division. He retired in 1961 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Interviewed by Becky Lloyd. 72 pages. |

Show ROBERT D. HAFFER PRIL 29, 2002 ROB: Okay. Donna Mae's husband started out as an enli t d man in th Marine Corps. Then he went to Officer's Candidate class and he was made an officer. H was a captain at the time. He and his wife were there at Camp Lejeune. Betty was her cousin. Betty had been living in Washington. She'd come down on a visit and I was doing an inventory of the officer's club and ran into them. I was thirty years old, Becky. I'd had several girlfriends, I guess, off and on but none that I was serious about. I saw her; three weeks later we were engaged; in three months we were married. We were married on the 13th of September, 1947. But what I wanted to tell you about Lorrie and Donna Mae Graham, he'd survived the war and they'd retired down in San Diego and he and his wife were on the way to church one night and this young man and his girlfriend, who was high on dope, ran the stop sign and crashed into their car; killed him and badly injured Donna Mae. She died here just about three weeks ago. BEC: Oh, really? ROB: Yeah. But it was odd. Luckily, they'd been stationed in Brussels, NATO, and he brought back a Mercedes. Luckily they were in the Mercedes or maybe she would have been killed too. I thought how ironic: he survives the war and is killed in some dumb accident back here. BEC: ROB: able to talk. BEC: Yeah, really. Now what questions do you have, Becky? I've talked. You must be (laughs) Well, I'd like you to continue on. You were engaged after three weeks, you said, and then three months later you were married. And where were you living then when you got married? 55 |
