| Abstract |
Shaffer (b. 1917) recalls growing up in Vandalia, Illinois, and discusses the Depression. He participated in ROTC at the University of Illinois and was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1940. He served aboard the USS Hornet at the time of Pearl Harbor, recalls Doolittle's raid over Tokyo, and the battle of Midway. He also served aboard the Montpelier and saw action in the Solomon Islands. After a period on Guam, he was assigned to occupation duty on Chichi Jima in the Bonin Islands, where he served as the senior member of the board of investigation for war crimes. He also served in Korea as naval gunfire officer for the 1st Marine Division. He retired in 1961 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Interviewed by Becky Lloyd. 72 pages. |

Show ROBERT D. HAFFER PRIL 29 2002 understood administration you know, paper work, bills money and I stayed th re till 94 when I retired. BEC: ROB: BEC: ROB: Wow. That's a long time. We've been over to Wasatch Lawn and purchased a couple of plots. Well, I don't think you're going any time soon, though (laughs). How do you like that for the end of the story, huh? Now what else can I tell you? You must have some questions. BEC: You've been very thorough about your World War II experiences. I was trying to think if there was something I wanted to ask you. But I have to tell you, I'm, again, just so impressed with your memory. I don't remember the name of my orthodontist. ROB: You don't? BEC: No, I don't and you do. But not only that, but all these other names, people you relieved, and this person who came in here, and this guy-you remember their names. That's amazing. ROB: Well, Dr. Berkeson was the only orthodontist in Champaigne. BEC: Well, maybe that would make a difference, but I'm sitting here trying to think, What was the name of my orthodontist? I can't remember that. ROB: No, and he gave me a chance to have a career that I wanted to have. And I guess I've remembered that. I used to send him a Christmas card every Christmas. I sent him one from Korea. He died and his wife died. I always used to send her a Christmas card. 60 |
