Show 6052 4055 have been on the 6th that we started out. By Mr. Blackmar: Q Do you recall a hard rocky ledge across the river at, approximately, Mile 112? A There was on place, and one only, in that stretch of the river, where it was very evident that bed- rock extended clear across, at a very shallow depth. The boat scraped on rock on the bottom, in the best channel that we could find, and the water must have been less than a foot above the bed of the stream, at theat point, for a distance of 50 feet or more. Q Do you remember a rapid at the mouth of Aztec Creek? A Yes, sir, that, I think -- in fact, I am sure it was the rapid that we took most particular care in running. There were quite a number of small rapids through Glen Canyon, but only three that I remember that were particularly -- Q Did you carry a map with you at that time? A Yes, sir. Q And did you make some notes on that map? A Yes, sir. Q Will you refer to that map, please, and tell me the first rapid which you passed? |
