Show 6035 480 Stabler - D 4038 A ( Examining plats) These profile sheets are intended to give a picture of the slope of the river -- slope of the water surface. By The Special Master: Q Some of the witnesses use the word " gradient". Is that the equivalent of " slope"? A Yes. By Mr. Blackmar: Q Well, as I understand it, what appears on the profile sheet, without accompanying data as to distances and elevation does not correctly represent what you would see on the river? A I do not quite get the purport of your question. If you refere to the fact that it is not drawn to a scale, that is correct. The vertical scale is ordinarily somewhat exag-gerated on the profile, in order to show more clearly the differences in slope. A slope, for instance, of one or two feet to the mile would not be visible to the naked eye on the surface of the earth, and would show practically as a straight line ( indicating on plat). For that reason, these ( indicating) are reports on an exaggerated vertical scale, so that the eye can catch the conditions and get a real picture of the condi-tions on the river, which it could not otherwise receive. Q So that the picture of the river is gotten, not only from what appears on the profile, but taking also into consideration the differences in the elevations which are |
