They had quite a bit of difficulty going through Cataract Canyon. " Q. Tell me all about it. " A. I think in the third rapid we had two boats get capsized. One I believe was No. 4 boat, eighteen- foot long boat; one was the light boat, sixteen- foot long, got capsized; the lighter one got capsized the lower part of the rapids, struck a rock; didn't do any damage to the boat, but turned it over, and naturally we helped them out; the men and the boat got through safely; then No. 4 boat afterwards was capsized pretty well up the rapids, about the middle of it. " Q. Did your party carry life preservers as part of your equipment? " A. Yes sir, life jackets. " Q. What is a life jacket? " A. It wasn't cork; cloth; fill it up with silk or some wool to keep you floating. " BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: " Q. Did you wear them? " A. Yes sir. " BY MR. BLACKMAR: " Q.
