Show 819 believes the engineers checked it over. He was the cook and guide for the party, and they went down in December, and out in January. R. 1937- 1938. At was early in January when they stayed over night on the San Juan River, but he doesn't remember whether there was snow nice on the ground. He does recall that there was plenty of snow on the way home. With respect to the San Juan River, he recalls that there was open water in the stream, which he judged to be about a foot deep. R. 1939. If the water extended out under the ice, he wouldn't know how far. He knows he forded the river going over at Dandy Crossing. He believes one of the men rode a horse, and led the rest. He doesn't recall whether he rode a horse, or went by boat. R. 1939 - 1940. " BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: " Q. You didn't walk across? " A. No, I didn't walk across." R. 1940. He recalls that he went on an expedition down the Colorado, for about fifteen miles, in a small boat, using cars; and he believes he was gone about four days. R. 1941. While down the river on that trip he did some prospecting, but did not stake out any claims. R. 1941 - 1942. " Q. Did you row the boat part of the way coming up, change off, sometimes tow, sometimes row? " A. Probably rowed some, and towed. " Q. Going up any river that is what you usually do, isn't it? " A.
