768 A dam site was surveyed on the San Juan River, just below Chinle Creek, as it was planned to take in the discharge of this creek. At this point a dam was contemplated about two hundred fifty feet in height above the bed of the stream. A dam this high would sub-merged the whole area in the reservoir site probably forty or fifty miles above the dam. It would have submerged Bluff completely and, as he recalls, it would back the water up some twenty or twenty- five miles above Bluff. R. 1839. He knows of no streams above the dam site, up as far as Farmington, New Mexico, that run all the year around, except possibly the Mancos River. At the time he saw the Mancos River it was maybe flowing twenty or thirty second feet. The Mancos enters the San Juan River about twenty or thirty miles below Farmington, New Mexico. R. 1840. In figuring a dam at this point he took into con-sideration the effect of the sand and silt. He had no silt samples taken and had no figures on it, but took it into consideration in submitting his report. He didn't make a reconnaissance of the possible irrigable lands above the dam site as the purpose of the reservoir on the San Juan was not for irrigation of any area of the San Juan.
