Vol. 10, pp 1800- 1811) He resides at Santa Monica, California; is thirty- eight years old, his occupation has been a fisherman; around San Fedro, Catalina Island, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz, California. R. 1900. He understands the handling of skiffs, power boats, and gasoline launches. He accompanied the Bray- Pathe Colorado River Expedition, in the capacity of boatman. E. C. La Rue had charge of this expedition, but didn't know how to navigate boats, and Frank Dodge was the chief boatman with the expedition. R. 1801. They left Greenriver, Utah, November 10, 1927, and the first day went down the Green River about ten miles. Up above the junction of the Green and the Colorado Rivers they had a few riffles, would sometimes get stopped and grounded, would have to work the boat off and go down the stream again. Some of the party would have to get out of the boat and push. R. 1801- 1802. The first two days after they left Greenriver they were stuck on sand bars a good many times. They could sometimes work the boats back and forth, and work then off, but sometimes they would have to get out and push. They had difficulty with sand- bars through Labyrinth Canyon. They would find sand islands in the river, and the channel would divide and go on both sides. If they were not watching, the swift current would shove then on the bars, or islands, R. 1803. |
