Show Ghapter Fifteen When Sandy reached the gates of the town, she saw two roads ahead of her, the wide one stretching to the left and the narrow one going straight ahead, up a steep hill. She ran up the narrow road, and when she reached the top of the hill, she stopped, out of breath. Below her lay miles of winding road leading through desolate hill countr;-, and beyond that loomed the towerin™ Cliff Mountains. The girl ran swiftly down the opposite side of the hill. She reached the bottom and looked back. No one was following her. She sat down on a fallen log and reached for the spoon. "Verus, who was that terrible man?" she asked. "He is probably one of Daemon's spies," answered Verus. "Yi/ho is Daemon?" "He is the evil sorcerer who rules the mountain people. He lives in an old rock castle on the top of the Cliff Mountains. You will have to be very careful that his soldiers don't see you." Verus paused. "Evidently Daemon knows I'm in the Inner Mountains. He will do anything to capture me." "Well, just let him try to get you!" exclaimed Sandy- She sat for a minute, thinking. "How will we get down into the valley, Verus? If the cliffs are as steep as you say, then it will be impossible!" "Nothing is impossible," said Verus. "Come, we had better go." Sandy put the s poon back into her pocket and started down the dusty, winding road.
