Show -63- covered the Inner Mountains, aad were extremely rocky and barren. Pausing to rest, she pulled the apple out of her hip pocket and ate it . When she was finished, she began her long trudge up the mountain trail. It was a most difficult climb. Finally, the weary girl could go no farther. She looked around for a safe place to stop, and found a mountain stream a short distance from the trail. Laying down by the stream bank, she promptly fell asleep. A soft, warm rain woke Sandy up, and she stretched her arms and yawned. A tiny 'splash' made her turn, and she saw several fish jumping in a shallow pool by the stream edge. Using her sweater as a net, she caught two small fish. With Verus' help, they were soon cooked and ready to eat. The rain had stopped, so Sandy wrung out her sweater and hung it on a branch to dry while she ate. She ate slowly, and when her sweater was almost dry, she put it on and continued her climb. After a short distance, the trail broke off in several directions. "Oh dear, which way should I go?" she cried. Her mind was made up for her when she heard voices approaching from the path that branched to the left. The path on the right was blocked by a huge boulder, so she ran straight ahead and hid behind a scrawney bush.- "She had to come this way, I tell you. There was no place else she could go. I followed the other path for miles and she certainly wasn't there!" |
