Show -38- "Then climb to the top and let's see what that 'ocean' looks like." Sandy put the spoon back and climbed the short distance to the top of the mountain. She then drew it out again. "Now Sandy , go to the left side and look over the edge." Sandy walked to the peak rim and peered over it. Below her was a huge lake, completely surrounded by a ring of mirrored mountain walls. In the very center of the lake was a tall, circular island which jutted straight up and was also entirely mirrored. Directly below her she could see the narrow steps which led to the edge of the lake, and the whirlpool surging into the inner cave. "It's what I thought, Sandy ," said Verus. "This is the Lake of Mirrors. V\fhat you thought was an ocean was merely the endless reflections of the mirrors surrounding the lake, and those people you saw were all images of you." "But there were so many, Verus! I couldn't even begin to see the end of them!" "Tha-tfs because you were being reflected on both the island walls and the mountain walls. The mirrors were reflecting each other. You were actually seeing into infinity!" "Then I must have gone in a complete circle, and because the cliffs were all mirrors, I couldn't see them!" "That's right, Sandy. You were able to see the ledge above you because the underpart was not mirrored. You might have been killed!" Verus sounded very grave. |
