Show -25- Sandy darted back, carefully skirting past the birds. Glancing over her shoulder, she saw that he was getting closer. She dashed along the stream bank, jumping over the hens in her haste. Rogare followed, while the creatures fluttered about again in panic. One of the frightened birds accidentally knocked Rogare into the stream. Sandy reached the last nest, and put Verus back into her pocket. As she stood breathlessly still, she could hear Rogare cursing and shouting above the din of the giant birds as he splashed about in the cold stream. Silently she followed the edge of the stream. She had noticed before she put Verus away, that the stream made an abrupt turn to the left about thirty yards ahead of her. As she neared the turn, the cave walls narrowed, and she had to cling to the wall to keep from falling into the stream. She reached the turn and paused. Rogare was still hollering at the poor, screeching birds. Upon turning the corner, she discovered that she would have to climb. The water was cascading down in small waterfalls from an opening a few yards above her head. Sandy felt the walls with her hands and discovered rocks jutting out above her. Gripping the rocks, she pulled herself up, climbing from one to the next. When she reached the top, she found herself standing on a platform of rock. She could see a dim light, and discovered that |
