Show Chapter Seven While Sandy slept, occasional flutterings and sighings of other sleeping forms merged with the gentle plashing of the cave stream. " COCK-A-DOODLE-DO.'" Sandy jumped, banging her head against the cave wall. "OUCH."' she yelled. "Squa-awk - squa-awk!" Startled figures dashed about, bumping into each other. "Ouch!" Sandy yelled again, as a sharp claw jabbed into her arm. The squawks became uproarious. Terrified, Sandy snatched the spoon from her pocket, and it's glow lit up the cave. She gasped, and backed up against the wall. Giant hens and roosters, blind from living in the dark cave and startled by Sandy's outbursts, were fluttering in every direction. There were dozens of them, and they behaved so comically that Sandy burst into laughter. This caused a further uproar, and feather started flying. She realized that these hugh birds could harm her, so she stifled her laughter and waited until they calmed down. Gradually they settled down and went back to their individual nests which dotted the cavern floor. Several deserted nests had two or three giant eggs in them. Sandy scooped up two and knotted them carefully into the folds of her sweater. Once the birds were cackling contentedly, she crept back toward the cave entrance. As she neared it, she heard a small cough. Tae thin man, encouraged by the noise and the light, was coming in! |
