Show 203 THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH Our area of interest is using supplemental materials in social sciences, in particular classes in political theory. Before starting fall semester 2011 we started thinking about the use of supplemental materials in relation to the Introduction to Political Theory class at the University of Utah. The class covers many prominent political theorists starting with Aristotle and Plato and ending with many modern theorists. We wanted to see how the supplemental materials could improve a class for individuals taking it. We were not just interested in the success of using supplemental materials but what types of supplemen-tal materials were most helpful. For the class we provided the students with different types of supplemental materials, which were received with differing levels of interest and use. We used the Canvas interface to deliver most of the required readings for the course and all of the different supplemental materials. We supplied biog-raphies for each of the theorist including information about their lives and contributions to political theory. We included pictures or paintings giving multiple prospective on the different theories. We also included criticism and support for the theorists, in particular the specific responses to the read-ings, which were required for the class. When available we also supplied the students with recorded lectures given by the theorist and interviews with the theorist. Our feedback from the students was, for the most part, positive about the inclusion of supplemental materials. Looking at the final surveys for the Fall 2010 semester compared with the surveys from 2011 we saw some similar results but students reacted positively to the inclusion of the supplemental ma-terials. There were very positive about the inclusion of extra reading materials but less positive about the inclusion of photos or pictures and the other materials.
