Show 223 THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH The Bryant Middle School Emeritus Alumni and Salt Lake Rotary Club Scholarship Program is designed to assist students who traditionally would not have access to the resources neces-sary to reach their full academic potential. Access to sufficient academic resources is limited by low socioeconomic status, language barriers, and lack of familial support. To help over-come these difficulties, this program provides academic tutoring and mentoring beginning in the eighth grade and continues until high school graduation. Upon completion of high school, these students will receive a scholarship, provided they fulfill certain requirements. We predict that the promise of a potential scholarship in addition to consistent tutoring and mentoring will motivate these students to graduate high school and continue on to college. Tutors from the University of Utah, the Emeritus Alumni board, and the Salt Lake Rotary Club meet with the eighth grade students at Bryant Middle School once a week for one hour. Tutor-ing sessions are done outside of the classroom and are on an individual basis to ensure stu-dents are receiving the maximum benefit during this time. Qualitative data about the tutoring program is collected via anonymous survey from the tutors and eighth grade students. The information from these surveys helps the program know what needs to be improved. Mentors from the same program meet with the ninth and tenth grade students at their respective high schools. The mentors track their grades and give them the support and advice that is neces-sary for academic success. Evidence from previous years has shown an increase in student performance. These trends are true for the current year as well. However, it is not possible to begin obtaining complete data until the first cohort of students graduate in the spring of 2014. Future work will involve continuity and improvement of current procedures.
