Show 186 Andrew Roth I studied landscape painting as a Rio Mesa Fellow, developing my skills in drafting, color, and com-position in oil paint. In truth, oil painting has always intimidated me, and I hoped Rio Mesa would provide a fresh environment in which to explore and experiment. Luckily, the Dolores River, surround-ed by sculpted slick rock canyons, was the perfect setting for intensive painting, providing endless subject matter and plenty of technical challenges. As I could only work while the sun was up, I woke up early and painted till the light was gone. My routine usually included one painting before lunch, one after, and then, as the sun faded, a good start on a third. Matching color of paint to color of rock and tree for eight or nine hours a day was taxing, but ultimately rewarding. Being totally self-directed and independent in a new environment was an academically unique experience and deeply satisfying.
