Show 2 president pershing's message President David Pershing spring 2012 The chance to do real research at the earliest stages of one's college career is a unique experience only a research-intensive university can offer. Stepping onto the beautiful campus of the University of Utah, our undergraduates enter a world of inquiry without limits. There are opportunities for discovery in every college and discipline at the U: from art history to human genetics, from urban transportation to bio-engineering. Students can join a project led by a member of our world-class faculty or develop one of their own ideas with the guid-ance of a faculty sponsor. Many of the discoveries our faculty and students make are significant, but the process of discovery it-self is invaluable - an endeavor that enriches everyone involved. When students move from textbooks to "hands on" research, they enjoy a transformative learning experience. When faculty members work with students, they are challenged with fresh perspectives and unexpected questions. And when our research yields notable results - a new company, a scientific advance, or a new approach to solving a pressing societal challenge - our friends and neighbors right here in Utah share in the benefits. This journal launched in 2001 with abstracts from 19 students. This year, it showcases the work of more than 250 students from across campus, many of whom are Undergraduate Research Scholars, a prestigious designation requiring two semesters of research, a presentation and publication. Our aim is to build on this momentum and inspire more of our students to imagine the possibilities open to them at one of the world's foremost research universities. I invite you to read on. You'll see that some very bright young minds are at work at Utah's flagship university! President David Pershing |
