Show 111 college of social work The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has between 8,000-10,000 members, many of whom reside in the twin cities of Hildale, Utah and Colorado City, Arizona. FLDS members adhere to strict religious practices including "celestial marriage", or polygamy. Each year, a portion of these individuals leave the community. Some make the decision to leave on their own, others are asked to leave by family members or religious leaders. This study utilizes a qualitative approach to explore the experience of individuals who have left the FLDS community. The study consists of two parts: a questionnaire and eleven semi-structured, in-depth interviews. This study explores the follow-ing: if the individual chose to leave or was forced out; their current relationship with the FLDS com-munity including family members; current beliefs; and the degree to which specific factors influenced their decision to leave. Research findings may be used to educate practitioners, legislators and agen-cies about the experience of individuals who have left the FLDS community.
