Show 577 During his trip on Green river he drank the river water, except when he came across a spring. The water was dipped out of the river and drank, sand and all, except at night the cook would dip up a bucket and let it cattle as there would be clear water for coffee in the morning. R. 1408. At Kanab the team and provisions were obtained and a man hired to drive the party to Milford, which at that time was the end of what is now the Salt Lake and Los Angeles Railroad, where a train was taken back to Denver, at which point they arrived July 29th, 1889. The second expedition left Denver November 25th 1889 and went to Greenriver, Utah, where they found boats and supplies already. there were three boats made especially for the trip at Waukeegan, Illinois. They were twenty- three feet long, three and a half foot bean, and twenty- two inches deep, quarter- decked all around, built of oak, with hickory ribs, a life- linearound the out- side, with ten water tight compartments in the bottom. They drew fifteen to eighteen inches of water when they were loaded. R. 1409. The boats were launched on the Colorado River at the mouth of Crescent Creek to which point they were hauled by wagon from Greenriver, Utah.
