Show 579 " A We arrived at Crescent creek on December 6th, and left there on December 10th; we stopped at Tickaboo rapids; at Trachyte one of the boats sprung a little leak, it didn't amount to anything, but we camped and fixed it. " Then we stopped where Hite was living, at his placer mine, there, a day, then started down the river a little ways, and we had some trouble with gravel bars, a little more than we had the first time, because the water was lower. There were placer miners working in the canyon, among them Jack Sumner, one of the men on Powell's first expedition. Sumner looked over the outfit, thought it was a good one and thought the party would get through. R. 1414. He saw no other boats on the river between Crescent Creek and Lees Ferry except those belonging to the miners. He did not inspect these boats to see how they were built, but noted they were just row boats with sharp bow and stern. R. 1415. At Kite three railroad men from Omaha were met, who had come down to inspect the placer mines on the river. He was introduced to the men by Hite. R. 1415. He did not see any power boats on the |
