Show 570 He saw some settlers at a place called the Rome Ranch, below Greenriver and another ranch further down, just below the mouth of the San Rafael. R. 1396. Between Greenriver, Utah and the mouth of the San Rafael the boats encountered both rapids and gravel bars. The boat in which he was riding struck a rock in the rapids about two miles below Greenriver, which knocked two holes in it. The place where this happened is shown on [ Exhibit No. 147] and at that time he waded to shore towing the boat. [ Exhibit No. 148] shows him and others before they got the boat to the shore. No other difficulties were encountered between there and the mouth of the San Rafael, except that the oars would strike, indicating shallow water. R. 1397. Between the mouth of the San Rafael and Labyrinth Canyon, some rapids were encountered but little damage was done to the boats except to spring the seams and make the boats leak. Sandbars were encountered once in a while and the occupants of the boat would then jump out and push it in the clear. R. 1397. All of the boats did not strike the bars, only the one in lead, giving the others a chance to stear clear and find another current. R. 1398.
