Show 544 In coming up stream he had difficulty with certain places where on the downward trip he did not have difficulty. He hadn't had any experience with motor boats except on the ocean. This was the first experience he had with a motor boat on any stream. R. 1332. He does not know whether there is less difficulty coming up stream with a motor boat than going down stream, because the water is not pulled out from under the boat by the operation of the motor as you go up stream, whereas it does have that effect at times going down stream. " Q You don't wish to be understood as saying that you had serious difficulty in going up and down the Colorado river, do you? " A Except we were aground a great deal in a shallow draft boat. " Q When you came aground you endeavored to shove off into deeper water? " A Absolutely, yes sir. " Q And succeeded in doing so in all instances, didn't you? " A At times we had to push the boat several hundred feet, zigzag it across the stream and back and straight ahead to get into deeper water. " Q That is when you got over on the side where there was no channel? A That was in the straight stretches." R1333- 1334 |
