Show Homicide (ICD-9 Code: E960-E978) (1997 Homicides in Utah = 63) Homicide is ranked 14th for cause of death in the United States. In 1996, 20,971 deaths were caused by homicide in the U.S.. The homicide rate is highest for teens and young adults, as the 2nd leading cause of death. For children ages 5 to 14, homicide is the 3rd leading cause of death. For adults ages 25 to 44, homicide is ranked 6th for cause of death74 Utah's homicide rate has averaged 36% of the national rate since 1980; ranging from a high of 48% in 1995, to a low of30%in1991. Of those victims, 71.43% were male and 28.57% were female. Teens had the highest percentage of homicide deaths (25.40%). In the U.S., the rise in teen involvement in homicide beginning in the mid-1980's was dramatic. For 14-17 year-olds, the victimization rate increased almost 150% from 1985 to 1993.
