Show Pertussis (Cases in 1998 in Utah = 297) Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, primarily affects infants under the age of one. Public health programs and immunizations have contributed to the significant drop in incidence rates since the 1950s. Since 1982, rates for the United States and Utah have fluctuated annually. For many years during this time the Utah rate has been above the national average. This could be explained in part by the greater proportion of children in Utah's population. There is no apparent trend in disease incidence in Utah. Although graphically the fluctuations in the Utah incidence are dramatic, they are probably due to the very small number of cases and the year to year variability of a communicable disease such as pertussis. In 1998, however, Utah experienced an unusually large outbreak of pertussis, affecting 297 people, primarily among unvaccinated populations8 Tables 61 and 62 Sources: Utah 1980-1998: Utah Dept of Health, Bureau of Epidemiology.
