Show Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) (ICD-9Code: 042-044) (1998 Total Deaths from AIDS in Utah = 18) Table 49. AIDS Incidence and Mortality* Both Utah and the nation have seen an increase in new AIDS cases from 1987 to 1993, but cases have generally been decreasing since. Utah's incidence rate remains below the nation's. The Utah:U.S. comparison shows that Utah has about one-third the rate of the nation in the number of newly reported cases of AIDS, although this number fluctuates somewhat from year to year. AIDS-related death rates are higher for the U.S. than for Utah. Death rates increased between 1987 and 1995 for both Utah and the nation, however they decreased dramatically over the past three years. The surveillance case definition of AIDS was expanded to include four new conditions effective Jan. 1, 1993. This has resulted in higher AIDS ^Crude Incidence and Mortdity Rates per 100,000 Population ~ Morbidity rates were computed from the total number of new cases incidence rates and AIDS-related deaths in each year, by date of report, not by date of diagnosis. reports for Subsequent years. 2 U.S. Mortality Rates are estimated rates and are age-adjusted to the standard U.S. population.
