Show Measles (Cases in 1998 in Utah = 0) From 1980 until 1988 it appeared that measles may have been contained. A national and statewide resurgence and subsequent decline in cases was then seen between 1988 and 1992. In 1991 the number of measles cases in Utah reached the highest level since 1971. The most prevalent age group to contract measles in 1991 was 5-19. In four of the last 10 years, Utah reported no incidence of measles. But Utah's rate for measles was again high in 1994 and 1996. Two factors in the state have lead to the highest rates in the nation. First, Utah has lower vaccination rates than the rest of the U.S7 Second, Utah has larger sized families than the U.S. As one member of the family becomes infected, the disease spreads to those who have been vaccinated but not fully protected by the vaccination. Measles primarily affects younger populations (age 19 or younger). However, since 1988, older individuals have made up to 10% of the total measles incidence. Table 58.
