Show Pneumonia and Influenza (ICD-9 Codes: 480-487) (1997 Total Pneumonia Deaths = 532) Until 1993, the age-adjusted death rate due to pneumonia and influenza in Utah was relatively stable and close to the national rate. Typically, the rate hovered between 13 and 14 deaths per 100,000 people. Utah's rate jumped in 1993, but has been decreasing since then and has become closer to the national rate. Individuals with chronic heart or lung disease, and those over 65 years of age are particularly at risk for pneumonia and influenza. For example, of the 402 deaths in 1990, 92% (370) were persons 65 years or older. Influenza is a communicable disease, and therefore random fluctuations in the mortality rate are to be expected. When much of the disease incidence is associated with persons 65 years and older, the fluctuation may be much less significant. Utah males are at a higher risk of death due to pneumonia and influenza than are Utah females. Mortality rates for both males and females in Utah have increased since 1979. Table 47.
