This type of assault is usually accompanied by the use of a weapon or by means likely to produce death or great bodily harm. Attempts are included since it is not necessary that an injury result when a gun, knife, or other weapon is used which could and probably would result in serious personal injury if the crime were successfully completed 70 Hate Crime The Uniform Crime Reports defines a hate crime, or bias crime, as a criminal offense committed against a person, property, or society which is motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender's bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin.71 In 1997, 8,049 hate crime incidents were reported to the FBI. Of the reported 8,049 reported incidents, 4,610 were motivated by racial bias (59.81 percent); 1,385 by religious bias (15.04 percent); 1,102 by sexual-orientation bias (13.94 percent); 836 by ethnicity/national origin bias (10.98 percent); 12 by disability bias (0.12 percent); and 4 by multiple biases (0.10 percent). The 8,049 incidents involved 9,861 separate offenses, 10,255 victims, and 8,474 known offenders.72 Utah law enforcement agencies reported 49 incidents in 1997.73 Table 94.
