Show - 9- MC: Yeah, I hear about all these Utes were one band one time around Grand Junction, so they scattered from there up towards Utah . . GT: Um hum, into Colorado . . . MC: Into Colorado . . . GT: And down to New Mexico? MC: Yah. GT: Would they have referred to those people as Weeminuche? MC: Yah, there are some Weeminuche over in Colorado. GT: What about the people here, would they have thought of themselves as part of that Colorado band? MC: Yah, they were just one band then, they're still one band. GT: Um hum. What about the Paiutes, now there are some people of Paiute blood that live in this area. Would they have been in part of the area you just described, traditionally? Would it have included some of those people? Now, some of the people we've just talked to say that they were born and raised down on Douglas Mesa and down into Navajo Mountain area. Do you think the Utes would have claimed that area? MC: Yah, there was nothing but Utes clear down to Tuba City. GT: And Tuba City used to be a Ute- Paiute city didn't it? MC: Right. GT: When did that start to change, do you think? MC: That's what I don't know. GT: A long time ago? MC: Yeah. GT: Do you think it changed rapidly? |
