Show - 3- MC: No. GT: You don't remember that. Was your mom Ute? Did she have any Paiute, was she part Paiute? MC: I don't know. GT: How about you Dad, was he all Ute? MC: Talked Ute. GT: Talked Ute, your mom too? Did they know any English? MC: No, one or two words, I guess. GT: When did you learn English? MC: Oh, I went to school in Colorado ( voice fades, can't hear) GT: Over at Ignacio? MC: Yeah ( can't hear). GT: Boarding school, hum. Were you in your first grade, kindergarten-first grade? MC: Yeah, I was there in first grade. GT: Uh huh. And did you speak any English before you went there. MC: No. GT: Not at all? ( laughter) I'll bet it was pretty difficult when you went over there. Did they allow you to speak Ute over there? MC: Yes. GT: They didn't get after you if you spoke Ute? Probably in your parent's generation they did that. They wouldn't allow the students to speak their native tongue and they would slap their hands if they did that. When you came back from Towaoc did you to to school after that? MC: Yes, I went to school in Blanding. |
