And he had a voice that won your confidence. It was warm. ~ He just knew what words to use. You always felt it was going to be better. O"1A- thought he was a good president. Very good. He seemed to carry the coontry along almost on his charisma. Yes. He had plenty of that. In my lifetime, I think the only tlk other one who had something like that was President Kenned~who wasn•t with us very long. We felt the same way when he died. It was almost like a personal tragedy in my life. Do you remember at what timein the 30s you became aware of Hitler androw. I guess I became aware of that before that when w I was younger andlived in New Yor~ because that was, I guess, during the first world war, we became aware of what the 9ermans were doingbecause they had a casket on Broadway. And I remember going with my aunt and she giving me a quarter. ~d for a quarter, I could pound a nail in his coffin. They had a coffin there and if you gave a quarter--for every quarter, you get topound a nail. It was supposed to be in his casket. The germans, you see were our enemies,.,..• J So you pound a nail into the german casket. { ~ /1t::li·.r~,, ~k~-l ~ I remember that. And then I w reemembe0 too, at the end of thewar, and we were let out of scholJwhich every child thinks is quite something.&nd we were allowed to go home1 because we were all celebrating the end of the war. The first war. And my aunt even bought me a new hat that day and so that made it doubly important~ When do you remmber becoming aware of Hitler. Hard to ~e:f pin it down to a date .... I gues e=a because of my father•s relatives that we heBrd about Hitler. SHipped out when they were in Germany, making a good living. ~oth the sisters and the~Ft= brothers and then sent to Siberia and my dad couldn•t ~ find out what happened to them after that.! think that•s were it affected me1 because it was very uspsetting to him. I never met themJ but even knowing that was upsetting. L They got shippe cut of Germany to ~eria. A See, they were from Lithuania. AndpPrt of the time, my Dad said, Russia had control of them and part of the time Germany had control of them. ~ Now, I don•t know at that time whether they were living in Lithuania but I know they were educated in Germany. L What do you remember--being aware of at that time ..... A I remember hearing how much he disliked Jewish people, but I can•t pin it down to a year.
