But it ws a very lucrative position to have in those days . And he was a character. My mothers' brother Harry. He used to skip through the streets. 7 He had 6 children of his own. And I made 7. He'd skip through the streets and sing--not the right words to son~ :a~ything that we~+e- he would make up that would rhyme. It would be just silly. And we'd skip along with ~~. And he'd sing andhe didn't care who heard it. And it was a lot of fun. Then when we ; fasted on Yom Kippur~ ~~'d go to temple and you know how he'd break the fast? On ice cream sodas. And my aunt would be very upset when we came home and we'd be all full of ete- ice cream sodas. L Inthe meantime, she would have preapred a dinner. A Yes, she prepared everything tht you're supposed to break a fast on,but none of us were hungry. But he was a lot of fun. And very generous. When he had the money. Nothing.He was always trying to help. He helped us as I tel qyou buy the house . 4nd then it was paid back by e~~ my Dad. I have yet a letter that he wrote and when my dad died and herefffered to that how it took him a long time but he paid back everything that he had borrowed. He said he was a man of honor. L Your father. A Yes. L I was curious. After you got back from NY and you saw how differently those people lived, how didfferently their sense of judaism was, did you ask your parents about that. A No. I didn't. I just took it for granted. It was A such a different kind of life1 but it didn't seem to bother me. It bothered me when I went therebeaause I didn't know anything about it and I'd get the dishes- milchik andflayshig ones all mixed up,or the dish towels mixed up. And--but when I came back, it didn't bother me.I was so glad to see my mom and dad and brothers. Again. No, it really d.,id n't vThe only thing that bothered me was I was spoiled andi'd ,, ca 11 my mother; mother , come here. And she • d say, "No, you're younger than I, r you come here to me.• That was new to me because my autns would run at myslightest wish or command you know. It was a very different life. A My dad's parents. I don't know much about them. I have their pictures and I know that my dad's ~~ father owned an inn. He was an innkeeper. In those days that was considered quite good and he had horses and carraage and sometimes my dad would go to school in the carriage. L In Lithuania. A Yes. But I dont know-- I know that his mother died of cancer of the stomach.
