Show Alberta ~ Freshman 6-3 p.15 A L A L A ]I was a conscientious student. I never had enough self confidence to think I knew much /so I w always worked hard just to pass. But I did well. I was on the honor roll in high school. khd when! went to the university of Utah, I knew I wanted to become a teacher. I don't know why,but I never wanted to become anyt~ing else. So at that time, you could take a · . ~~ L normal course , ~nd I had some very good friends. I've always had close friends that !appreciated very much. And we were happy. Although we were cetainly different fr in high school from most --the more sophisticated students. We had much more firm discipline. I wasn't allowed to date when other people did. Not at all. No, not at all. And I had plenty of girl friends, but my mother didn't believe it was the right thing to do,so we didn't. I even wore my hair different and had nice clothes. Some at that time were even made for me. · And I had another uncle at dept. store in n.y. that would send me things. But I ~ don't know why my mother could put over that you could be different and it was all right. So it never really bothered me. When I look at it now, I wonder if it hi:O c£ , c£..-.. 't- ·-- lEcause I wore my hair down my back long after other peoplewore it up. I had curls. And finally J~ when I was a senior, it was in a bunch in be back. But I didn't have my hair cut, coiffered until I started college. What did thatmean to have you bair cut short or long. '"' ' ~" It didn't mean ~t to me--it just meant that everybody was doing it and I wanted it done too. So my mther cut it first, but I didn't §9 even go to a beauty parlor. I'd go to a regular~ barber to haveit cut.4nd when it grew out, again, I havent e~t kept it short more than about 6 months and let it grow and then . L Did your parents encourage you to go to the univesity. was that good foryou? A THey always wanted us to have a collgeroucation,but they never influenced me really. I just knew I wanted to and they, of course, were glad because they felt people should know what they want to do. And it wasn't-- I did get a start from my aunt in New York for my first two years., really, helped out. And my folks helped me. I didn't wor.k when I went to school the first two years. My brothers worked. My older brother Mark, the musician, was a fellow that workedin the night in the wee hours having a dance orchestra of his own. He'd go all over Utah. L Your younger brother. A Myolder brother. L Your younger brother A Yes, and myyounger brother would work for my dad. We ~~ never did get allowances. We just we~kee --were part of thefamily and accpeted all kinds of responsibilies. Because we were part of that family unit. And we wanted it to succeed. But you could teach after two years of schooling, then. You called it a normal certifi~ate. Whv eees-~t-ee-eR~ did vou oo on. |
