| Abstract |
Two interviews were conducted by Leslie Kelen. In the first interview, Alberta Freshman (b. 1907) recalls her childhood in Salt Lake City and New York, and discusses becoming an elementary school teacher. In the second interview, she talks about her family background, the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Adolph Hitler. She also remembers various minority groups in Salt Lake City and speaks of the changes she has seen take place in education over the course of her 46 years as a teacher. 44 pages. |

By getting really excited~~ about seeing a friend after so many years. L Now was th~s the people that went to Siberai : A That~ was their children . Some of their children. Some of my dad's sisters and brothers. They only ~ one who ever came to America besides my fat her Jacob, his name is Jacob, was the youngest in/ Fami ly named Abe, after my mother's father1 who was Abraham. And my brother abe is named after him ,too. But he was L A the only one whocame to this country , ~nd my father let him work for him in Cripple Creek,but he was very out going and he liked the ladies .~n dhe liked the easy life and he was caught stealing from my father's jewlery store to get money to entertain his girlfriends. So my father told him he couldn't work for him anymore. And,unfrotunately, my father didn't forgive him andhe left ther~ ~nd went to Texas, this Ae~e- Abe Freshman .pnd he wrote to my mother and my mother ~uld write to him. And he was in the clothing business. He'd take samples of clothing to different town s in Texas. And in one trip that he was taking, there were some animals that came across the road and he tried to stop his car. And somehow or another, .he had an accident and the steering wheel crushel~is chest andAhe died. And they called us in the middle of the night to say he was killed in an auot accident and how it happened. And what should they do with the body. So my Dad had it brought to Salt Lak~~ . ~nd he really felt terrible then that~~ hadn;t communicated with his brothe~~d I can still see him when we had a small funeral. And my dad saw him after all those years that he just burst out and sobbed. It was too late then. But that's the only brother that came here. He had no sisters here. Just my dad and ~y-ye~R that younger brother. Sad story. v-r t... !tis a sad sotry. But some of my father's sister. One iS a lawyer, one ts ,~ doctor . One a teacher. And they were sent off to Siberia and never heard of them after that. Not a bit. So my dad only had two relatives left of his entire family. They were nephews. One was a pharmecist, Paul Freshman. And one ::- n-J "- a dentist. And his name was Illiah Freshman, A russian name. And they came from Germany where they had been educate.d And they were both doing well there and during the secondwar, managed to get to England. And my dad, it was his one desire to get them to come here. But they liked England and ~dad was older and out government wouldn't let him sign the papers to get the visas here. Because he was about 7~80 years old and they said they thought he was too old to be responsible for them. So 1 signed 5and my older brother signed1but they stayed in [ngland. They are both [still] there. AND ONE I~ cam eover her to see us about 15 years ago. And I went to see them about 12 years ago . Thy're still in Brighton and the oldemorhter whos~~i ~haracist is n in r~anchester in the Home for the Aged. They both marrie cl:nglish girls. |
