| Abstract |
In her interviews with Leslie Kelen, Esther Landa (b. 1912) talks about her childhood, her parents and grandparents, going to school at Mills College during the Depression, and working for a school in public relations. She also speaks of her memories of Jewish refuges in Salt Lake before World War II. She discusses the involvement of her father and grandfather in the Utah Junk Company and in the Eastern Iron and Metal Company (EIMCO). Also included are descriptions of her involvement in community affairs and her thoughts on resentments and tensions between two groups of Jews in Utah. 83 pages. |

Show Eshter Landa p.41 3.16 that was the National Council of Jewish Women had furnished a volunteer for that for many years. And so being a publicity person, I as asked to and so I did th~ publicity for the 19--, I don;t know, 1947 Christmas seal campaign. I dont rememer which year it was. I did a hell of a job. ~R~a~=was That was radio, newspaper, posters, the whole thing., promoting the christmas seal campaign which at that time was for tuberculosis and LtJ (I) G.- disease. L Were you consciously involved in women's causes.then too. EL YEah, I think so. In fact, my sister ~ said when she found one of her old diaries, she had something written down from where we were at dinner at my grandma and grandpa's when they lived in the Knickerbocker Apts. and that's got to be when we were very young kids. And she has something in there that they were having a discussion eee= and Dr. Zucker was there for dinner evidently. And we were having a discussionabout higher education. Es And she has written down: ~ said, what about the women. I don't remember that t but she has that in the diary. So I guess.-- I think'· having gone to a woman's college, I naturally would be interested in what was geiag= L You talk as if you've been asked these things many many times. EL I've been interviewed more times than you can .shake a stick at. I mean, you know, as national president, you get interviewed on radio an tv and newspaper all the time. Some of these--youj know, like giving stuff back to the community, that's a pat an~r. But it's honest. I=~ia~=t~~s It may be self serving but I think it's honest. And the fact that I don't like house work. And you weren't allowed to go into business. SO you dn't L Most women weren't encouraged to go into-- EL I don;t think for women. L Did you ever try to go into business? ~ .. |
