| Abstract |
In her interviews with Leslie Kelen, Esther Landa (b. 1912) talks about her childhood, her parents and grandparents, going to school at Mills College during the Depression, and working for a school in public relations. She also speaks of her memories of Jewish refuges in Salt Lake before World War II. She discusses the involvement of her father and grandfather in the Utah Junk Company and in the Eastern Iron and Metal Company (EIMCO). Also included are descriptions of her involvement in community affairs and her thoughts on resentments and tensions between two groups of Jews in Utah. 83 pages. |

That was a couple of years ago. hfte \L.~ ca~ ~-he would do everything for us and there was one man who worked g,r-dl.. down there w~o was a govd gardenier, ol~ J~my ~l ,~o he and ~~~ would come up in the truck when--that was still when we ____,.,~---- lived on Yale Ave--he would take care of our yard, mow the lawn and fix the gardens and stuff. But anyway, E~~ painted~ this big box of mine silver. And he was in Rarge of it and it was stored down at the old IMCO and that's the last I ever saw it. So I don't know if I can look up anything about Mills college ... ?: Do you remember being inspired by--to work towards women's issue ... E: Well, Ithink the fact that I went to a women's college had a big influence on me. I think I probably, you know, my subsequent activities would have been very different if I hadn't gone to a woman's college. ?: Now yousaid that you didn't go--~st girls didn't go to college to pursue a profession or career. E: No, unless ~ they were going to become teachers. ?: But while you were there, did these things enter your mind-- E: Yeah, and I was an Enlgish major and then I worked--when I came back to work for my masters, I worked for what was known at the Publications Office which is where they did the PR and the publications and so and so. worked And that got me interested in thePR and I I tor a crazy old woman R«Z.trf;.Aio 'K e~-p called ~ 1 )R ~ who has written some histories of Mill College. And that's how I got into the PR and publicity business. which is what I finally went into. Was through working wi~ft- in that afice and having contacts with newspaper and writing and that kind of stuff. So that iHe-e£-ma sort of shaped my career. From that time on. |
