| Abstract |
In her interviews with Leslie Kelen, Esther Landa (b. 1912) talks about her childhood, her parents and grandparents, going to school at Mills College during the Depression, and working for a school in public relations. She also speaks of her memories of Jewish refuges in Salt Lake before World War II. She discusses the involvement of her father and grandfather in the Utah Junk Company and in the Eastern Iron and Metal Company (EIMCO). Also included are descriptions of her involvement in community affairs and her thoughts on resentments and tensions between two groups of Jews in Utah. 83 pages. |

L EL How did she inspire you. ~ Well, at that time, we still had the chapel so no matter fodZ.. where we were CR the weekend, we had to beback in our chapel seats at 7:30. She was a Ubitarian. So it was a sort of a non-denomination of kind of chapel service. But in 1929, it was still compulsory. You had to be in your chapel seat andeeeeHt: accounted for by 7:30 on LEttY(; NS Sunday night or else. We had some very good chaplains. Rober t Levens. Who I think was also a Unitarian chaplain and we had Dr. (t--wr li1.ner was a chaplain? Oh, what a minute, there was that famous philosopher, I'm not sure he was the caaplain. Maybe he was. Howard Grit ten. They were ~a/\kers. HOward and Anna Cox f3 tf?.. 1 N1DIY He was quite a famous scholar. We had outstanding people. One of the best things about Mills college was it had a very strong music program. And no, I w~'t, I toldyou , a musician in any sense.We had concerts and they?sual~ had {{__famous string quartet in residence during the winter and teaching summer session. And that's how I got hooked on chamber music. We had the Pro /tl<-1 £ quartet from Belgium. And we had the ""}Tfl-A[J I v'A-~tt)5 t3o OA-(JF;5-t stratevarias and we ended up with the buddaphest and I became very good friends with the Budapest because by that time I was working and doing publicity. So that was one of the outstanding things. Every Wed. night and every Sunday afternoon, there would be a string quartet concert A /}-~ in the music bldg. The Pro t~ f was before them [the budap.], the strat. the polish, just every string quartet. L Did your tom boy background get i ~our way. EL No. Not for that. I learned to like music. Not opera.
