| Abstract |
In her interviews with Leslie Kelen, Esther Landa (b. 1912) talks about her childhood, her parents and grandparents, going to school at Mills College during the Depression, and working for a school in public relations. She also speaks of her memories of Jewish refuges in Salt Lake before World War II. She discusses the involvement of her father and grandfather in the Utah Junk Company and in the Eastern Iron and Metal Company (EIMCO). Also included are descriptions of her involvement in community affairs and her thoughts on resentments and tensions between two groups of Jews in Utah. 83 pages. |

EL I think-- I don't think you could cook stuff and bring it in though, because everything had to be fixed there so it would be pesachdic . L Did your mom help her? EL Oh, sure. L Did you help too? EL I remember they had a big chiha closet with a glass fran t and the guys would sit in their chairs and then after dinner, they'd start to lean back like this. We'd have to yell, "Be Careful!" so they didn't crash into the China Closet.· Oh, and then I remember the big buffet and where Grandma used to keep the candy. On the side of the big buffet. See, I lived with them, I think I told you, when I went to business~hool, I lived with my grandparents because my family was living in California at that time. I--that was about 1934. So that as a long. time afterwards. L SO there was no sense of you guys trying to hide the fact that yomvere Jews. EL Oh no. L There was no sense that you rwere trying to move into the community and move away from the past. EL No, I don't think so. I mean, we attended the synagogue, I went to Sunday School, we observed the holidays. I don't think there was any str ______ _ Wait until you get to later on, but not now. L You went away to school in 1929. Why did you pick that school or how was that school picked foryou: EL Well, I think we looked at--alot of us at East High school were looking for colleges and I think efie~ people thought at that time, to go east was really going an awful long way aways. So there was Mills College. Supposed to be the best woman's college , west of the Mississippi. So alot of us picked it. Now I wonder if there was a high school $i counselor |
