Show Section 1 Utah's Demographic Characteristics Population The population in Utah increased again in 1998, but by the smallest number since 1990. Net migration into the state dropped considerably. This is thought to be due to the economic recovery in California coupled with a slowdown in Utah's economy1. The increase in population has been supported by the State's economy and high birth rate. The population of the state remains young, the death rate is relatively low and the fertility rate is high. Table 1.
