Show BasketballAs the chronicle of victories and defeats for the 1915 basketball season would show, the schedule was unusually hard on Utah. Even harder than the cchedule was the fact that alternately Utah played intercollegiate rules and A. A. U. rules. This resulted in frequent fouling in all of the games played by the Crimson team and as a result, Utah lost the state championship on fouls. In the main, Utah made two to one more field baskets than her opponents.Utah had an abundance of material from which to choose a winning team. Such veterans as Beal, Briggs, Mclntyre, Clark, Knowlton, Van Pelt, Udy and Packer formed a combination that was hard to beat. The elimination of Packer on account of eligibility for a time threatened to upset Utah's prospects. Clark and Packer had worked together as forwards, and each was acquainted with the style of play of the other. The work of Van Pelt and Udy who were placed in Packer's position was exceptionally good and what was seemed a great calamity for the Crimson team turned out much better than was the exception. Two games stand out as tragedies in Utah's record-the B. Y. U. defeat, 29 to 28; and the B. Y. C. defeat, 22 to 17. The first was a theft, the second was a great surprise and a great disappointment. In the first game, score 29 to 28, Utah led all the way until the final five minutes of play. Then a number of fouls were called, Utah's, spirit was broken and a heartbreaking rally of the Brigham Young quintette upset the dope and Utah lost. Utah lost. The other game was not expected at all. On the northern tour, Utah had its hardest opponent in the Aggies. The next night they played the B. Y. C. group. Thinking that this game would be easy, the second string men were sent in, with the idea of saving the first string men for the coming game with the B. Y. U. The score at the end of the first half stood: B. Y. C, 17; Utah, 6. Utah then sent in her first team, but it was too late. The handicap was greater than the Utah squad could overcome and the game was lost. The trip taken to Montana was in most respects successful. Utah bumped up against several strong teams and made them dance to a pretty tune. Utah defeated the Triple B team of Billings, Montana, for it was the first time that the northern aggregation had ever been beaten on its own floor.Although Utah lost the championship to the Brigham Young University, she procured some consolation by defeating them 38 to 20 in the final game of the year. In the game, the southern team was outclassed in all departments, receiving its worst trouncing for the year at the hands of the Crimson team. The Utah team demonstrated beyond doubt that its group was the real championship team.CAPTAIN-ELECT CLARK113 |
