His first work in behalf of the sport was in increasing the number of team members from three to five. This occurred in 1922. The following year through his agitation, the net sport was elevated from a minor to a quasi-major sport, and over a period of years it has finally came to be recognized as a major sport, calling for a major sports award. Parmelee is an old Crimson athlete, an expert track man, and a tennis player of ability.TRAINERThough the catalogue lists him as trainer, Einar Nielsen is much more than that-he is a combination of jester, preceptor of morale, medicine man, bone-setter, and M. D. The jovial trainer cast his lot with the Red Devils back in 1914 when Nels Norgren, now Chicago U. baseball mentor, was coach. He worked with Tommy Fitzpatrick from 1918 until 1924, and has been a fixture since the beginning of the Armstrong regime in 1925. His annual burlesque banquet, abounding in mystic Indian rites, was begun two years ago with Dr. Roy Groesbeck as a co-proponent.WRESTLINGSherman "Pete" Couch has been affiliated with the Ute athletic strategy board for only two years, but his connection with Redskin athletics dates back to 1926 when he first donned Crimson vestments as a member of the U. of U. basketball team. In his stay at the hilltop plant he won three letters in basketball and two in football, junior college participation at Weber precluding further varsity competition. Couch, along with Vere Champion, has guided the destinies of the Papooses for two seasons-handling the linemen. In the 1931 wrestling campaign he became mat tutor, barely falling shy of a western division championship.Page One Hundred Ninety-four |
