Show elevations, 7900 to 10800 feet, while the others, /. perenne, I. puberulum, and /. subteres , are found at lower elevations. All varieties of this flax are used to make cordage for nets. All are found in the study area ( Goodrich and Neese 1986: 175). ECOTONE ( 1995: A- 18) listed only the blue flax ( L. lewisii) in sagebrush and grass environments on the Uintah- Ouray Reservation. Uses by the Utes: It was used as cordage to make nets ( Smith 1974a: 273). A A3. Monkeyflower ( Mimulus floribundus, Scrophulariaceae): Reported Locations: Goodrich and Neese ( 1986: 276) report the guttatus variety of monkeyflower is common in the foothill areas of the Uintas, near stream banks, boggy meadows, and rock crevices. ECOTONE ( 1995: A- 13, A- 24, A- 30) also identified the M. guttatus variety on the Uintah- Ouray Reservation. This was identified and sighted in sagebrush locations along Whiterocks Canyon and also in Uinta Canyon( 1.2). Ute Medicinal and Ritual Uses: It is reported to be used as floral decoration at gravesites ( 1.2). Uses By Neighboring Great Basin Populations: According to Fowler ( 1986: 78) the Eastern Shoshones used the stalks of a related plant, the Mimulus guttatus. A,. 4.6..... Quackg. rass ( Agropyron repens, Poaceae): Reported Locations: Quackgrass is a European introduction to the Americas, occurring along ditch banks, fields and lawns up to 9,000 feet in the Uinta Basin ( Goodrich and Neese 1986: 199). ECOTONE ( 1995: A- 6, A- ll, A- 14, A- 18, A- 25, A- 31, A- 34) listed quackgrass on the reservation in many environments. Food Uses by Utes: Both Fowler ( 1986: 76) and Chamberlin ( 1909a: 32) indicate that the Northern Utes ate the seeds of this grass. No confirmation is given by consultants. Uses by Neighboring Great Basin Populations: Quackgrass seeds were also eaten by the Gosiutes ( Chamberlin 1911: 360; Fowler 1986: 76), and by Owens Valley Paiute ( Fowler 1986: 76). A.. 4.7 . Sunflower ( Helianthus sp, probably annuus, Asteraceae): The Ute name for sunflower seeds is either /? akwu= pi/ or /? ukwu= pi/ ( Smith 1974a: 273). Reported Locations: Three varieties are found in the Uinta Basin according to Goodrich and Neese, annuus, nuttallii, and petiolaris. All three are widespread from 5,000 to 7,000 feet, mostly along ditches and streams, although the petiolaris is found in sagebrush and juniper communities ( Goodrich and Neese 1986: 59- 60).
