Show having the oldest recorded Ute settlements in the area dating back at least to the 1820s and the first trading post in Utah, Fort Robidoux ( Auerbach 1941: 40; Creer 1947: 74- 78; Morgan 1953: 167- 168; Conetah 1982: 78). Historically, the area in and around the town of Whiterocks has been heavily populated by Utes especially by members of the Uintah and White River bands. And today the highest population concentrations of Utes on the reservation are located from here to Fort Duchesne in the south. This demographic fact means that increased pressure is put on areas used for various traditional purposes. In turn, the region's high level of utilization contributes substantially to its cultural significance and value among the Utes. 10 |
